govt encouraged to abolish road tax and replace with vehicle excise duty like the uk

In the run-up to the tabling of Budget 2023, the government has been advised to abolish vehicle road tax as it is seen as a burden on Malaysians.

In a report by Sinar Harian, National Assembly member Muhammad Zahid Md Arip said that the vehicle tax mechanism in Malaysia sees taxes overlapping other taxes that Malaysians are required to pay. Hence it is a burden to many lower-income families.

He emphasises that not only are Malaysians forced to pay taxes upon taxes, but the residents in Klang Valley especially are also forced to pay tolls every day to get to their destinations.

Malaysians should not be forced to continue paying several different types of taxes and Budget 2023 is the best opportunity for the Prime Minister to come up with a new mechanism.

Zahid used the United Kingdom as an example. The country abolished the road tax system back in 2015 and only imposes a Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on car owners.

To cover the loss of revenue from road tax collection, Zahid suggests the government consider methods such as reducing fuel subsidies as this would be fairer to the people and the government.

In case you didn’t know, the taxes that are imposed on car ownership include import duty, excise tax, sales and service tax (SST), and road tax. The SST, in particular, is calculated based on the sales price plus export duty and excise duty all at once.
