Maverick recently topped Black Panther and is now one of the top-grossing movies of all time in the domestic box office.
Top Gun: Maverick was a sequel a decade in the making and worth the wait. Critically acclaimed pretty much across the board and now officially in one of the top five highest-grossing movies of the US box office. The rest of the list consists of James Cameron’s Avatar, Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame, and topped by Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, talking about the upcoming Fletch movie, Jon Hamm who plays Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson in the Top Gun sequel took time to celebrate the movie’s success, especially the rarity of non-Marvel/Star Wars becoming genuine blockbusters.
“It’s the only film to be number one on Memorial Day and number one on Labor Day,” Hamm exclaimed. “That’s unprecedented in many ways. It’s one of the only top five [films] that doesn’t have somebody in a cape or on a spaceship. It’s a story about real people, it’s got a lot of emotional resonance, people are really responding to it.”
Maverick recently beat out Marvel’s Black Panther, which garnered the studios’ first Best Picture nomination, to become the fifth highest-grossing movie in North America. Not bad for a movie that was essentially on the shelf for 12 years.
“It couldn’t have happened to a nicer movie,” Hamm added. “It’s so nice to see that happen to that younger generation of actors too, who really get to experience this and build on it and have their career blossom because of it.”
Hamm is one of Hollywood’s leading men that have yet to make the jump to superhero fare. He was featured in a deleted scene in 20th Century’s New Mutants as Mr. Sinister and was in the original running to play Doctor Strange, who was eventually played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Hamm can next be seen in the upcoming Season 3 of The Morning Show on Apple+ and in Confess, Fletch, playing the titular character.
